What is a “Victim” of Domestic Violence?
It’s not everyone’s favorite topic to discuss, yet I seem to be doing it every day.
Our society has dangerously mistaken only physical violence as domestic violence and has deemed the person with the bruises as the only victim. This is bad information. Everyone in the family is a victim of domestic violence, whether they are the target of the assault or not. And by “assault,” I mean any words, behaviors, threats, actions (or inactions) that affect the safety and well being of any individual in the family system.
Here is a very graphic example of how the one not being hit is absolutely a victim of the domestic violence:
